New York, December 2024
Dear friends,
On December 10th the UN celebrates the Human Rights Day - the day the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), in 1948. The UDHR is a milestone document that proclaims the inalienable rights which everyone is entitled to as a human being - regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status. It is the most translated document in the world, available in more than 550 languages!
This year’s Human Rights Day theme is “Our Rights, Our Future, Right Now” and it is a call to acknowledge the importance and relevance of human rights in our everyday lives.
Human rights are a pathway to solutions, playing a critical role as a preventative, protective and transformative force for good. As UN Secretary-General António Guterres has said, “Human rights are the foundation for peaceful, just, and inclusive societies.”
We have an opportunity to change perceptions by speaking up against hate speech, correcting misinformation and countering disinformation. This is the time to mobilize action to reinvigorate a global movement for human rights.
By defending human rights, we can prevent harm before it happens.
Human rights are the common thread that binds us all together to foster peace and stability.
By protecting human rights, we protect our future.
Human rights are not abstract ideas. They offer protection, ensuring everyone, everywhere can live in dignity and respect.
By advancing human rights, we create a fairer world.
Upholding human rights isn’t only about addressing present injustices, it's about reshaping unjust societies and empowering marginalized groups.
Human Rights are Everyone's Rights!
Respectfully,
Dr. Despoina Afroditi Milaki
IPA NGO Representative at the UN
