Standing Together Against Gender-Based Violence: A Call to Action

Dear Presentation People and Justice Contacts,

We are midway through the annual 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign, and I am deeply inspired by the work being carried out by Presentation People around the world. Your tireless efforts embody the spirit of Nano Nagle, who worked to illuminate lives in the darkest of circumstances. Today, our mission is no different. We are called to shine a light on the pervasive issue of gender-based violence and take meaningful action to end it.

This global campaign reminds us that the fight against gender-based violence is far from over, and the stories from our Presentation communities give me hope and courage.

  • In North India, the Presentation Sisters have initiated a signature campaign, empowering children to gather support for initiatives to eliminate gender-based violence. Three schools have already participated in Children’s Day events, incorporating materials that educate students on how to end violence against women and girls. This innovative approach of engaging children, men, and schools is a powerful step toward raising awareness and fostering change.

  • In South Dakota, USA, the Presentation Sisters, in partnership with the Benedictine Sisters, have taken action by purchasing a new billboard along the highway in Waubay, SD. This billboard provides crucial information on how to seek help in incidents of human trafficking, raising awareness and offering a lifeline to those in need.

  • In Thailand, Presentation People are overcoming language and distance barriers to bring communities together. Eight villages have participated in collective programs aimed at reforming policies to protect the rights of women and children. Their work is bridging divides and ensuring that the fight against gender-based violence reaches even the most remote areas.

  • In Queensland, Australia, Presentation People are offering compassion and practical support through care packages for survivors of domestic violence. These packages, filled with essential items and messages of hope, are a testament to the power of solidarity and care.

These incredible efforts remind us that the fight against gender-based violence is a collective one, requiring our courage, creativity, and unwavering commitment.

Nano Nagle’s legacy calls us to stand with those who are most vulnerable, to act where action is needed, and to never shy away from uncomfortable truths. Today, her lantern of justice must light our way as we challenge systems of violence, advocate for change, and create spaces where women, children, and all vulnerable groups can thrive.

Let us commit to not just being non-violent but to being anti-violence. We must actively dismantle the systems that perpetuate harm and build communities where respect and equality are non-negotiable.

I encourage all of you to reflect on how you can take a stand in your own communities. Whether it’s through education, advocacy, or direct support, we each have a role to play. Let us continue to carry Nano’s lantern into the world, bringing light, hope, and justice to those who need it most.

Together, we can make a difference.

Together, we can end gender-based violence.

With gratitude and solidarity,

Jessica Dewhurst
